Handwork is still an issue for me right now and that has given me the push to reorganize my studio and spend more time at the sewing machine.
This piece of folded/dye-painted cotton was uncovered in the tidying up process. The horizontal bands nudged my design toward a landscape. This was far more time consuming a project than I ever expected. In part because finding the right blues in my stash to depict the Blue Ridge Mountains was a bit of a challenge. In the end, paint sticks and variegated threads were a big help!
I also learned that just because I was using the sewing machine.....the massive amount of stitching still took a lot of time.

OH, but what a difference all that stitching makes! This is wonderful - I recognize the blue ridge mountains right away.

Simply gorgeous! You found just the right blues and that sky...beautiful! Even on a machine quilting can take a lot of time!
Worth the effort, I would say. Indeed, laying in lines of close stitching takes time whether done by machine or by hand. Machine makes it only a tiny bit faster. ;-) Coming to terms with that new machine or are we still trying to whip it into submission?

It's Mary here....to answer Idaho Beauty......I'm not fighting the machine anymore....accepting that it's not the comfortable Pfaff I had and trying to learn the positives about this one!!

What a wonderful piece!!! This turned out great, Mary!!!!Love it...and just reading your blog today, feeling so sad with our world and happenings....this piece just seems to fit....I look at it with sadness but then see America in it!!! Just my mind working overtime...yes, it is your mountains but they too are our America. Again, a wonderful job!!!!
