2015 ASHEVILLE QUILT GUILD RAFFLE QUILT

PTA (Professional Textile Artists), an invitational group of 14, of which I'm a member, was asked to make the 2015 raffle quilt for our Asheville Quilt Guild.

The completed quilt was presented to the guild at our March monthly meeting.  As I understand it, this year's guild president is encouraging members to revisit their stashes and consider upcycling fabrics.  Therefore, all of the fabric for this quilt was donated by members of our small group.

Attribution will be forthcoming when I can obtain better photos.....but I wanted to share this lovely quilt with you and provide our show link...raffle tickets will be available soon.

SUPPORTING OUR FRIENDS

Our quilt industry has grown tremendously since my start along the quilting highway over 25 years ago.  One thing that hasn't changed is the support quilt instructors give unselfishly to each other.

Some of you may be aware that Mary Lou Weidman's husband recently passed away after a brave battle with brain cancer.  What do quilters do to show support and friendship?  We make a quilt!  I understand she has been posting photos on Facebook, (I'm not on Facebook)......so for more photos...you can search them out there.

Kathy Kansier coordinated the effort and put the blocks together.  The theme was to be whimsical, in keeping with Mary Lou's style and to help lighten her heart.

I hope you will enjoy a closer look at some of the blocks.......
Made by Mary Stori....which I blogged about here.

COLORADO QUILT COUNCIL

Now that I've gotten over the shock of winter's arrival......seriously....I all but put it out of my mind in an effort to stop its arrival! Our temp. is a super cold 9 degrees.....I'm really beginning to believe we've been told a pack of lies about how 'mild' winters are here!! Schools have been closed for the last two days and lots of other activities canceled due to the snowy, icy roads. However, the sun is just coming out now so it should improve and now I'll shut up about it....I'm sure it's worse in other places!

Let's get back to chatting about Colorado Quilt Council. It's the state guild of Colorado, consisting of dozens of local chapters. Each month they meet in a different location around the state. December is their wrap up month.....so the business meeting was long.....starting at 9:30 AM.....my presentation didn't begin until 11:20......and concluded about an hour later....just in time for their luncheon. It's been my pleasure to visit this guild well over a half of dozen times during my career, so it almost felt like home.....so many friends, familiar faces, and new pals to meet!

I'm guessing none of us really 'like' sitting through long meetings but I was so impressed with this one. The charter of this group is education but that doesn't mean they've ignored charity/volunteer efforts.....in which they are very active. They do amazing work!

The installation of new officers was also held. Though I've experienced many, many at various groups across the country, this one was special. First of all.....it's a large board......smart...spread the work around!! But here's what was special. Each of the executive board members were individually called by name and a short job description was read.....asking them to verbally promise to carry out their duties. With that came a red rose.... It's vital to have volunteers and I think this gave the audience a real understanding (and hopefully appreciation) of the importance and dedication required to fulfill their duties. It was impressive!

Show and Tell probably took a good 30 mins.....and no one was blabbering excessively....they just had that many wonderful quilts to share. I wasn't seated in a location where picture taking was easy and unfortunately, I can't match quilt makers names to their pieces but I did ask for blanket permission to post any photos that didn't have someone's head smack in the middle.....so here goes...

ooopps.....yes, there is still a head here..... But I want to share this one.....it was make featuring photos, taken of the quiltmaker's garden. A photo program on a home computer was used to tweet them after which they were printed on her home computer.....

Two good friends made these quilts....both are named Terri......thus the 'T' designs.

Then, with their scraps, they made smaller ones to exchange.......great idea....

Again, since the meeting had run so long......time was limited.....so I wasn't able to get better photos of these two wonderful woolfelt pieces. They were inspired by my "Bead Embellish Wool Collage" workshop during my last visit to CQC. I'm happy to see someone else has gotten bitten by the woolfelt bug!

The view you are seeing is of the top two block of this quilt........the design was created using the shirts/clothing of a family member who had passed away. Isn't this a novel way of utilizing the fabric, rather than the more traditional patchwork? Nice....

Then....in the lobby of the church......I spied this decorated Christmas tree........

Here's the whirling dervish, Bobbie Aug, who kindly helped with my book sales....not to mention waiting for 3+ hours to fetch me from the airport when my flight was late.

Yup.....the ornaments are beads......well......pearls to be exact. They are constructed using wire. I don't know whether they were commercially made or created by an individual or group connected with the church. It was stunning!

More adventures to come tomorrow........

MORE CREATIVE INSPIRATION

The very productive members of our PTA small fiber group always make show and tell such an inspiration.....here are some more great pieces from our meeting this past week.

Gen brought this new purse to share.....we all wanted to keep it ourselves!

She also claims this is her last big quilt......we don't believe her. It was made specifically to fit the bed of someone special.

And another of Gen's pieces that she's been working on for awhile......a large pieced quilt.

I liked the combination of patchwork, heavy machine stipple quilting, embroidery, and the addition of painted flowers. Lovely!

Georgia Bonesteel lives on a lovely quiet lake......her property reminds me so much of the cottage lake homes we frequented while I was growing up in Wisconsin. She's in the process of completing this vertical loom. It's located on a flat area of their hillside, near the water.

It's basically a wood frame structure, fitted with heavy twine, where other fibers can be woven through for display. She had a basket of plant material along with colorful strips of knit fiber that (if I got this correct) she got at a sock factory.

I came home all jazzed about making one......unfortunately, 'the husband' has yet to see the charm in it!

Wouldn't you love a view like this??

The water lily flowers were just opening......it brings me back home with memories of the Midwest....and grateful that I'm now making new ones here in the mountains of North Carolina!

GOOD FRIENDS & GREAT INSPIRATIONS

Due to a super busy travel teaching schedule, while living in the Chicago area and SW Wisconsin, my connection with local quilters for years and years was few and far between.

After moving to NC 4 years ago, I was determined not to isolate myself as much.... Happily, several of my fellow national teachers live here and through their introduction, I was welcomed into PTA, a wonderful fiber group of 12.

This month we met at Georgia Bonesteel's home.....and honestly you'd think it had been months since we'd all seen it other.....not just weeks! Yack, yack, yack......such fun!

Dort Lee brought several quilts to show....these are small pieces......probably about 9" x 12". She's an amazing artist and can draw so well....I love her pictorial quilts! Last month when we were at my house, we did a little 'garage sale exchange' of things we no longer needed..... Dort got these wooden fish buttons from me. Why didn't I think of this clever way to highlight them??

Dort lives on a 'very off the traveled road' piece of property. I can visualize this tractor hidden among all the foliage somewhere in her valley. She will be participating in the Leicester Artist's Studio Tour in August. I'll get more specific details and post it soon for you locals to check out.

Here's another of Dort's pieces.....all are for sale.... If you've fallen in love with one, contact me and I'll put you in touch with her.

Show and tell comes in many forms......here we've literally taken a shoe off Barbara's feet as we all drooled over her new find. Adorable, aren't they??

Mary B. brought a fabulous piece of African fabric her daughter brought back for her from a recent visit to that country. I can't wait to see what she does with it.

MAY'S FIBER ARTS ALLIANCE MEETING

Show and tell at our FAA meetings is always inspiring......thank you ladies for allowing me to share your work on my blog.

This first piece was made by Kate Weston.....a pal who belongs to the PTA group I'm in. Kate is one of these rare quilters who makes both fantastic traditional quilts as well as art quilts. I love this new piece...the design and color elements are so well chosen, her quilting adds depth and helps the eye to travel around. Kate's quilts always display expert workmanship and attention to every detail.

Sally Fargo had us all in stitches when she unvieled her self-portrait piece. She incorporated numerous embellishments which made this fun quilt even more exciting to explore.

Here's her label.....and the inspiration for the quilt.

Don't you just love the clever and whimsical use of embellishments?

Here's a book cover.....a great way to personalize one's journals!

This piece was mostly made of batiks......besides the very well chosen fabric patterns and colors.....what made this quilt so unusual and striking was the use of horizontal piping between the rows.

Dolls are always such fun to make and examine.......again, it's the details that bring these items to life!
What a great use of wool sweaters!! Machine wash them in HOT, HOT, HOT water, dry on the hottest setting to create miniature felted sweaters that can be cut apart and repurposed as a doll or child's toy.

DOLL MAKER

The Asheville Quilt Guild's speaker this month was elinor peace baily (she does not capitalize her name), a very talented dollmaker. I've known elinor for years as a fellow national instructor, Fairfield Designer, and Bernina Artisan.

She demonstrated to us that her hair is not a wig and proclaims her dress attire is on purpose to generate attention. She succeeded!

Her trunk show lecture is such a treat for audiences.......she allows the dolls to be passed around the audience which is a wonderful way for everyone to examine and admire the details. Of course all of us had to peak at the panties and here....Naughty Nurse's other under-garments.

elinor really does make the most wonderful, detailed, and creative dolls. This one is her husband. Enjoy the rest......all photos presented on this blog are with her permission.
