GALLERY ADDITIONS

With this narrow wall in my Woolworth Walk Gallery space in mind, I've been creating some smaller & narrow pieces to display.  (Located in downtown Asheville, NC on Haywood St. in the historic Woolworth building, completed with original soda fountain.)

With so many homes now featuring open concepts, finding space to hang a larger art quilt may be difficult, however many of us have this type of area in our homes.  Perhaps these pieces will find a new one!

REFRESHING GALLERY

Winter is generally a slow sales time at Woolworth Gallery.  Happily one of my bigger pieces on display sold and this new quilt ("Japanese Tiles" - 51/5" x 45") was added in the space on the left.

And...some fun new mini book covers.  The design was inspired by a small zip clutch featuring a Moose, gifted to me by a friend...thank you Lynn.  The hand-dyed houndstooth wool fabrics were the perfect combo for this little bear cub.

NEW YEAR AT WOOLWORTHS WALK GALLERY

As you can see....I'm getting back into my normal routine...health drama be damned!  Here's a look at the majority of my space at Woolworth Walk Gallery (downtown Asheville, NC).  Did some housekeeping today....adding a ton more book covers, new quilts, and realizing I need to get back making more wet felted baskets!  It's never boring being a fiber artist.

NEW LOOK

Spring hasn't quite arrived yet, but our warmish weather has folks out and about in downtown Asheville, visiting galleries and shops.  Judy Simmons, my booth mate and I, gave our space a fresh face.

 We are so pleased to have some of our bigger pieces greet shoppers at Woolworth Walk Gallery.  They are displayed on railings original to the historic F. W. Woolworth building and help to welcome folks to stroll down to the lower level where our booth (#235) is located.

 Judy now has her hand-dyed scarves more conveniently displayed on a large circular rack located to the left side of the large back wall.  We are splitting that space. My side displays quilts - 2 large and 2 small, while Judy's green/blue/back/white piece is her main focal piece.

Judy utilizes the left side for smaller wall art and a card rack of her lovely eco-printed greeting cards. 

Winter is always a slow sales time so we are encouraged that the mild weather may bring visitors here soon.  Of course if you see anything that strikes your eye....holler we can arrange a sale by mail order

NEW LOOK FOR WOOLWORTH WALK ART GALLERY

The super large space allotted for our exhibit at the NC Arboretum (July 26-Sept. 16, 2018) allowed for some of my bigger pieces to be displayed without as much crowding, as is the case in the limited area I have at Woolworth Walk.   

So.....I removed some of the pieces at Woolworth Walk and replaced them with smaller work. 

The two black and white pieces are STILL very crowded together...looking more like one piece in this photo but not in person.  Hopefully one of these pieces will go home with one of the many shoppers that pass through the art gallery.

NEW LOOK

Summer finds the streets and shops in downtown Asheville teeming with visitors.  Happily one is going home with one of my pieces from Woolworth Walk Gallery.  That means a new look for the railing at the front entrance (center quilt), along with a new patchwork piece Katen Weston just hung.

It's a good time to be an artist in the Asheville area!

SUMMER LOOK AT WOOLWORTH WALK

The Memorial weekend is upon us and with that, here's a peek at my summer look for my space at Woolworth Walk Art Gallery in downtown Asheville.  I'm hoping for a very busy season!

FORGET THE COLD SNAP - SPRING COMES TO WOOLWORTH WALK

It might be freezing in most of the country....but Judy and I braved the weather and revamped our Woolworth Walk booth. Out with fall/Christmas pieces and in with bright cheery looks for spring.  It really is just around the corner you know!

 This is the new look of my space.

 And here's Judy's....I didn't capture her lovely scarves which always look like spring is in the air!  Be sure to check them out if you get to downtown Asheville....we are in booth 235, lower level.

We also changed out some of our quilts that greet shoppers as they enter the gallery.

 Judy added these two great pieces.....both so very cheerful and good additions for some lucky shopper.

There are over 100 artists' work on display in the store.....stop by if you are in the area and prepare to be inspired.

The fun continues.....my hand wet-felted/ice-dyed wool yields various sizes of embellished pouches.  Available in space 235 - Woolworth Walk, Asheville, NC 

PREPARE OUR ART FOR FALL SALES

I've been surprised at just how much attention my space at Woolworth Walk in downtown Asheville requires.  Happily my sales have been respectable, in part due to the steady stream of felted items being sold.

 Believe me I'm not complaining.....the 55 min. drive each way is especially pleasant at this time of the year as the leaves begin to turn their glorious colors.  My space has been restocked, tidied up and ready for tourist season.

 Kate's drive all the way from SC is much longer but worth the effort as her wall also reflects the coming season.  I absolutely love her large quilt....the machine quilting is fantastic...this piece should fly off the wall!

Judy added a number of her stunning 3-D pieces.  Using her hand-marbled and machine stitched fabric to cover canvas covered frames, she highlights them with life like silk leaves.  The image derives from real leaves, scanned into her computer and digitally printed onto the fabric....stiffened with wire to provide dimension.  Masterpieces, each and every one!

WOOLWORTH WALK - NEW ADDITION

Our welcome quilts at the entrance to Woolworth Walk are doing their job.....helping to alert shoppers to venture down to the lower level where they will find quilts by Judy Simmons, Kate Weston, and myself in space 235.

I just hung "Scrap Bag Star" 72" x 72" (center) to replace another big one of mine that just sold.  Happy, happy! 

FALL COMES TO WOOLWORTH WALK

We have been lulled by our previously tame and mild winter, followed by a lovely temperate summer with sufficient rain....but yikes.....the acorns are now falling, ground foliage die back....oh my winter can't be far away.

Looking on the bright side, the spectacle of fall color attracts a lot of tourist whose impact is very positive for Asheville and our surrounding communities.  So in preparation, my pal Judy Simmons and I headed off to Woolwork Walk in Asheville to refresh our walls with visions of the season.

QUILTS WELCOME CUSTOMERS AT WOOLWORTH WALK

New artists to Woolworth Walk in downtown Asheville, NC are assigned space in the lower level.  Often customers find so much to look at upstairs that they miss visiting half of the store!

 We all know fiber lovers will go out of their way to get their 'fix' of textile art....now the work of Judy Simmons (left) - Mary Stori (center) -  Kate Weston (right) have the opportunity to greet customers as they enter the gallery space.

Judy works in a smaller format and her diversity is visible here with two of her wall quilts.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS - Woolworth Walk

This will be a brief, right to the point post.  We are officially open for business at Woolworth Walk in downtown Asheville.

 Setting up our space went fairly well, once some items were installed.  Here Judy and Kate are drilling holes into the clever scarf racks Kate made.

 .....And then installing on a side wall that would otherwise be pretty much dead space.

 While they worked on those tasks, I began to hang my work....following the master lay out plan developed on my guest room floor!  That left me available to  assist them as their quilts got hung.

 Judy's space - Judy and Kate are sharing the hanging scarf rack in Judy's area, and a floating shelf in Kate's.  The canvas portfolio rack under the shelf will be shared by all of us.

As we were packing up to head back home.....the first two people to step into our space were quilters, visiting Asheville from Cary, NC.  Let the fun begin!

COMING SOON.......

 Last August pals Judy Simmons, Kate Weston and myself were juried into the well known Woolworth Walk in downtown Asheville.  The popularity of this gallery is evident since it took until about 2 weeks ago for us to be finally notified that a space was availalbe.  I may not be overstating by saying most of the artists stay on there for years.

Woolworth Walk is a uniquely Asheville experience; a privately and locally owned gallery in the heart of downtown, located in a historic building and representing local artists exclusively.  It's complete with a working soda fountain!

Our space is in the lower level, where all 'new to the gallery' artists start out. We purchased the lights from the previous artist and set about plans to paint the walls white.  The flooring is original, stone or ceramic is our best guess....it desperately needs cleaning!

Once we divided up the space.....armed with measurements of my section, I taped off our guest room floor to help me decide what pieces would make the best use of the space. We've exhibited several times at the NC Arboretum where we had the luxury of displaying 90-100 pieces.....that is NOT the case here.  We pay for every square inch so it's important to utilize it!

Besides wall art, I'm hoping there will be a lot of interest in the felted bowls/baskets I so enjoy making.  I planned on using one of the many ladders scattered about our home but ended up deciding on this one.  It was made from recycled barn wood, with narrow shelves rather than steps. I stored baskets filled with all sorts of handy items that I use constantly in my studio. 

 Even with measurements available, I found it necessary to visually ascertain how it would look.

Taking the time to preview how some of my pieces would fit was beneficial.

It was a bit dismaying realizing how few wall pieces could be displayed.  So I considered another option in order to add just 1 more piece.

 I tied out this cubby hole bench (also made from recycled barn wood).  After a ridiculous amount of indecision, I finally chose to use the ladder because the bench was only 19" tall. A longer, taller table may be in my future....

 This week we were back at our space to paint.

 Not surprising, it would require two coats......ever heard the term "watching paint dry"?  We were definitely doing that....anxious to get on with the transformation.
