HURRICANE REPORT FROM THE MOUNTAINS

It's hard to believe that 6 hours away from the coast, we'd experience any impact from Hurricane Florence, even considering how big it is. Naturally, one's heart goes out to all those who are truly coping with the storm.

We started getting a light but steady rain about 4:30 PM yesterday, 20 mins. later it stopped.  Sometime over the night hours it began to rain again....still light with moderate winds. Our county has declared a state of emergency as rainfall predictions are said to be very high which will cause flooding, mud slides, and downed trees.  Thankfully all is well here in our Upper Crabtree mountain valley at 3,200 feet elevation.
This isn't to say we've taken the warnings lightly....our two tubs are filled with water.  WHY?  Because we have a well and when the power goes out.....there's no water....among other negatives it means no toilet flushing!
All our devices are charged.  We have food on hand that can easily be heated on a camp stove, propane canisters for our Coleman lanterns, our outdoor furniture is tied down.  Now we are hoping none of these precautions will be necessary.  I get VERY crabby when we are without power....so it may be character building time if it comes down to that.

After being without power for 5 days a few years ago, we added a generator! We also have a well!

I spoke too soon....it's coming down here like an open water spigot!! If money was no object....we too would have a generator....just haven't been able to justify the huge expense for a whole house one. Maybe someday!

It is so devastating for sure...and we certainly appreciate our electric power when it's not there! But good you have made arrangements in case this luxury isn't there!! We have a well and I have extra water jugs just in case. My step daughter and hubby drove down to Ashville area to go to their 'lodge'! Fortunately, there house sits up on a high mountain hill..hope you don't get more than just rain, which is bad enough. Get that hand work ready and a good book (or 2!)..take care my friend.

Thanks for the update- it is a surprise how much rain these storms have, and not just for the coastal areas. Our granddaughter is to be moving to Charlotte this weekend!! Not sure yet how all this is affecting her plans, but she has a new job to start there. However, her route is right down Hwy. 81, so I'm thinking she will need to wait until things quiet down. We debate the generator idea, too, but so far have not taken that step. It's soooo costly, and then the maintenance of it added in. Our longest without power has been a week- and it is crabby time for sure. We're on a farm, so also have well water. It gets pretty ugly. But still- that's a lot of money. Well, good luck. And best to those downstream- the flooding is sure to last a bit.
