A dye painting session with the Fiber Junkies last fall yielded numerous pieces which intrigued me.
Clearly I have no drawing skills, but I hoped the wonderful colors would lead to a satisfactory finished product.
With a thin cotton batting on the reverse side, I decided to explore some of the built in Janome 8900 stitches.....starting with the mountain area.
After a lot of experimenting on scraps of fabric, I pretty much stuck to a single applique stitch. The threads were all Sulky Rayon, some variegated, some not.
This mercerized white cotton was a second.....with a flaw. Well, it wasn't a flaw to me...it was a design opportunity!
My plan was to feature one very large pine tree to cover it up.......but that's not how it ended up. You know how that goes, don't you??

What a perfect way to showcase the hand dye! Did you paint on the trees? Very effective. What paint did you use? Or is it ink? Or fabric?

So Mary, (I'd be able to pick your trees out of a line up) and those colors - only you would go so bold for the sky and pull it off.
I can't say why this made me smile so when I saw it complete. So much warmth glowing behind those trees. The fabric simply reads so differently once the trees are added. Peaceful, lovely, the stillness of sunrise. . .
As for the bazillion decorative stitches - isn't it the way? I too have spent lots of time trying out unpteen variations only to go back to a few more simple standard ones in the end. Interesting use of that ragged zigzag.
