Normally my procedure is to wait until projects are completed before composing a post. This allows a better overview of the piece. However, all 3 pieces I've been working on are soooo time consuming that I've found myself 'filling in' with non-fiber related posts. So, I'm jumping the gun here.
I RARELY, and I mean rarely do not finish something I start, but this one....I'm just not sure if it's worth continuing. I'd love to hear your opinion....that is if you can even formulate one with so little of the design developed.
In the fall, Fiber Junkies had a play date using soy wax resist. If you care to know more.....click here and here to read my posts. This piece began as an appx. 15" square of solid goldish/yellow silk noil.
A landscape theme seemed to fit the design, so I sketched 3 mountains and began to hand embroider a basket weave pattern on the first.
I guess I could start one and see how I like it......but maybe I should just reconsider. Maybe remove all that handwork and perhaps 'scribble' stitch with the sewing machine....or hide it in the closet as is until I forget about the whole thing!?!??

I like it. Maybe a purple mountain added to create a bit of contrast?
I'm thinking that ultimately the texture of the lines and basket weave embroidery plus what else you do is going to make this piece very interesting. Maybe you are responding to the muted contrast right now rather than busyness? Possibly a dark outline stitch along the mountains and other features could create a more marked value change. My vote is to keep going and see what this can be. There's a vision there. Sort of like cleaning the sewing room- you reach a point at which you wonder why you started and yet in the end it all comes right!
Could you possibly approach it as a purely abstract piece? Lose the mountains/landscape idea, turn it on its side and play with those horizontal lines, adding your stitches or beading along them. That is what I would try. This might even be a background for one of the cabochons if oriented that direction. I think I agree that the lines are just too distracting with the way you are headed right now.
I am liking the direction this is going....please don't hide it in the closet...unless of course you have those cute little hand stitching elves that will do some of the work for you......he he he
I do think a greater value change might help. Basket weave does take forever though. Just think of it as a learning journey :)
I like Idaho Beauty's idea of an abstract piece. The curves and horizontals could have a very interesting conversation!
I think the piece is beautiful! I would fuse a black silhouette of an old tree on top, and off to one side. I think it would provide the contrast and the needed focal point, without too much distraction from your lovely stitches.
