PACKING MY BAGS

Tomorrow I head out to the Forsyth Quilters Guild in Winston-Salem, NC.  Gosh....it will be nice to have an opportunity to get acquainted with more NC quilters.

The lecture I'll be presenting Monday night is "Wool Collage - What's Old is New Again."  It's based on my newest book "Embellishing with Felted Wool"....which you'll see on the right side info bar of this blog.

I've been focusing on felted wool for about 3 years now......and am pretty smitten with it.  I love that the edges don't have to be finished.....allowing me to 'bead applique' (securing motifs with beads) rather than utilizing hand or machine blanket or decorative stitches.  Though, I incorporated those methods as well.  Projects translate well with traditional and contemporary designs.....as you can see below.

SHOW AND TELL

Show and Tell at the Fiber Arts Alliance is always inspiring.....sadly I'm never quick enough to get photos of everything, but I hope you'll enjoy these.

Fran Williams created this piece using both wet and needle felting wool fibers.

Gayle has taken broderie perse to the ultimate level that I've ever seen.  Her work above and below is amazing.  Cleverly, if she doesn't like the colors of the fabrics she has to work with ....she'll paint them to acheive ones that coordinate.  And example is the butterflies above were painted gold!  Seeing this in person, you'd never guess that's not what the original fabric was.

This small purse was crocheted using a thick yarn combined with eyelash yarn/thread.

Sally Fargo has been exploring creating windows in small study pieces.  The netting was originally around a ham!  The view from the porthole really glowed.....

LOCAL TALENT

The monthly Fiber Arts Alliance meeting featured two very talented members; Elaine Zinn and Julie Simpson....both have enviable resumes that encompass many artistic fields.  Their willingness to share their creative work is an example of what terrific gals they are!

The focus of the presentation was making fabric beads.....which included tons of ideas about how to use them.  Here Judy Simmons (another fabulously talented artist) is rolling a strip of her hand dyed marbleized fabric, spread with glue....onto the end of a bendable straw.  Once dried...the fabric bead can be slipped off and used as an embellishment, in jewelry, or even as a button.

Examples were coming fast and furious.....so it was difficult to get stop action photos.....here you'll see beads that were made by wrapping/glueing yarns and thick threads around a plain, unfinished wood bead.  Bamboo skewer work well to hold the bead until it's dry.

Julie has strung some of these beauties onto memory wire and alternating other larger beads for a fast and attractive necklace.

This approach is also simple but very effective.  Take a fabric tube....stuff small sections with fiber fill, divide with large beads.  It'd be a fast way to coordinate a necklace with your clothing.

This piece is a bit more elaborate......I love the effect of the rich embellishments!

Here you'll see some large beads.....encrusted with seed beads. (look hard...for the white circles)  The fabric leaves feature stitching and sprinkles of beads, but the center piece, made from long shell like beads is what really makes this necklace a stand out.

Thanks Ellen and Julie for sharing your work!

9TH SNOW!*!!!**!!

Okay....enuff!!!  I expected cold and snow in Wisconsin....but this is NOT what we were promised.  Temperature is 4 degrees, I don't even want to know the wind chill....as these mountain winds are blowing gusts about 40 mph!

And on top of it.....we are both still sick.  I've actually improved enough to be very vocal about how bad this virus is and how sick I am of being sick.  We've resorted to purchasing a humidifier, with Vicks vapor steam.  Our house smells like an old folks home!!

We should own stock in Puffs......seriously, and I mean seriously......we've gone through at least 5 boxes and counting.....

AND....we've become our own doctors....prescribing at will......this is our 4th bottle of Coricidin....which we are using day and night.

It's so nice to have something to look forward to........saying hello to feeling well is one!

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY

I've now spent hours trying to figure out why my photos won't upload......decided to do a test and ta-da....now it seems to work.  My love/hate relationship with technology continues.

Since I didn't do anything (that I know of to fix the problem) I hope it was just a glitch.

We are still sick around here.....I'm better after 10 days of this crud, but 'the husband' is not.  So, we've cancelled our Super Bowl Sunday plans and will veg. here at home.  Sadly, we won't be flying our Packer flag today.....maybe next year!

We also reflected that 3 years ago today our realtor brought us to look at our house.....we bought it a week later.  A very gutsy move for two people who expected to live in WI for the rest of their life and don't like change.  It was probably good for us old farts to think like irresponsible teenagers during this decision time......or we'd still be freezing in Brodhead, WI today!

ACE OF DIAMONDS #2

I have NO IDEA what's going on with blogger, if I try posting in the compose mode the pictures will upload, but not the text......I'm editing this in now....

Can anyone more techy than me guide me to what's wrong?

The following photos are more details from Ace of Diamonds.......as you can see......I've had fun beading this piece!

BLOGGER NOT WORKING FOR ME

Sorry gang......I've been trying to unsuccessfully post photos now since Fri.  Managed to get only 3 posted after hours of attempts.  Frustrated because I can't even find how to report this to blogger.....anyone know?

ACE OF DIAMONDS

I'm slowly feeling better....but not really good enough to do much......I was waiting to post photos of this finished challenge piece I'd recently blogged about.....until I could get a better photo, but I'm not up to trying today so I hope you'll still enjoy it.

Ace of Diamonds 32" x 32" - created for my fiber art's group challenge.  I was to feature the letter A.

I used bead embroidery to embellish the appliqued letter A and one of my edging stitches (Spiral) along the seam line.  These technqiues are featured in "Beading Buddy"
Here's my economic blues blog special........order the All-In-One Beading Buddy from me now for $16.99 and I'll pay the shipping.  I can bill you via PayPal.....or you can send a check....click on the link above for mailing address is using a check.

The beaded collar was made using the brick stitch.

I'm getting grumpy because I've tried to upload my photos for over an hour now and can only get these three to post.....blame it on our really, really lousy internet.....grrrr!  Oh, well....it will give me something to share tomorrow since I have a feeling the only activity I'll have for the day is continued pouting under a quilt......hopefully with the remote in my hands...unless 'the husband' wrestles it from me......he's succumbed to this virus too.  I'm sick of being sick!!!

CHILI CONTEST

An added attraction this year at the Daytona Speedway racetrack was a Chili Contest.  Ya, I'd rather be looking at Dr. McDreamy......but ya gotta admire the ingenuity of these contestants and their clever booths.

DR. MCDREAMY

Yup.....as some of you have already guess.......it's Dr. McDreamy.  He's just as dreamy in person as on TV........though quite short and very slim.  He was very gracious as people mobbed him for autographs.  One little girl asked for his phone number....everyone got a real chuckle out of that.

BTW - Mr. Ashely Judd is Dario Franchitti....a very accomplished driver and super cute too.
