I've admired his work for years....so much so that I chose Banksy as my inspiration for our 2011 PTA group challenge. We were to create a 30" x 24" piece inspired by a living or deceased artist.
Below you'll see the signage that accompanied my piece "Wash Day" at the exhibit, along with a photo of the quilt which is now in a private collection.

Delightful piece, Mary. I had heard the story of the painting and being "Banksy-ed", but did not know much more. The video of the painting shredding is quite something. I'm off to learn more. Thanks for visiting my blog- the necklace was great fun to make!
I remember when you posted something about Banksy...in fact, I don't think I knew about his art until you did a post. Didn't you also link to a video or movie or somewhere??? I love your pieces...but aren't you glad you didn't spend the million on his latest piece! HA
Mary, I immediately thought of you when I read this in the paper this morning, remembering your homage and that I had to look him up because I'd not heard of him before. They only showed the piece before shredding so thank you for providing the visual I needed to understand how this worked.
I was slightly but not very amused by the various reactions, from horror to positive spin: "Geneva-based artist Pierre Koukjian, who was at the auction, said the buyer was “very lucky” to own a now-historic piece. He called Banksy’s prank “a turning point in the history of contemporary and conceptual art.” Lordy. There's even a rumor that Bansky was sitting in the back. Frankly, I've never cared much for artists whose thing is to make art meant to denigrate and/or disappear over time. I get why some of it is necessary to get a point across but I'm way too much about archival!
From Mary....this saga has certainly generated lots of shock and awe....... It now seems the lucky or unlucky buyer may have a piece worth twice what he paid. Frankly, it's nearly impossible to believe the auction house didn't know or suspect something.......don't they inspect and authenticate art before offering it for sale.....how a complex and assummed heavy shredding device (with an opening in the frame) could go undetected is not believable. Perhaps the bidder was also aware? And yes to Robbie's comment...there are numerous videos/movies about Banksy...just google him....many are on Netflix and even some online. I actually think this is a hoot.....shaking up the all too stuffy art world where art speak can often be nauseating to read. (in my humble opinion.)
