Typically I prefer to stablize my work prior to adding any stitching or motifs. It not only provides strength but texture as well. That's because I often work with whole cloth.
My go to stablizer is Pellon lightweight non-fusible interfacing which I purchase by the bolt. Here I'm simply stitching the two layers together using my walking foot and a wavy stitch pattern. The color of this first photo isn't accurate....the background is more like the 2nd one. Motifs follow......often fused applique which are always edge stitched....generally with a small blanket stitch. Stay tuned won't you??
