AUTUMN - NEW FELTED PIECE

Multi-tasking has been the name of my game all week......"Autumn" is one of the results of my efforts.

It began with a some rather unique fabrics.  My friend Gen (master of everything to do with fabric), dyed a pile of batting....YES.....our quilting batting.  She used liquid rit dye and got these wonderful results, which she shared with me.

Some of the dyed batting was combined with a piece of wool that I had felted, dyed, and then sun printed.  The images were created by using circle and rectangular sticky paper labels as the resist.
Using the shape of a maple leaf, motifs were cut and fused to the background which was stabilized with non-fusible lightweight interfacing.
Next, I machine stitched veins and stems.
.....and spent two evening hand embroidering seed stitching to provide more texture and interest.  The final touch was to back the piece and add two loops to fit 'just the right side aged stick' from the ever growing stack I collect along our daily 'forced march' on our mountain roads.

I love the uneven edge - it really adds a lot to the piece!

The seed stitching was the perfect textural addition to the piece. I admire your business acumen, too.

You have achieved wonderful subtle colors for the background...the leaves are highlighted beautifully. I see we share galleribba membership, too. Love your work!

Autumn can hold off for a good long while still....but this piece is quite fabulous! Love the coloured quilt batting....I know the texture is fabulous. Quilt batt also takes fabric paints really well too!

Seriously amazing. I really didn't think much of that piece of wool, no offense, but you have brought out its beauty in this design. How did you like working with the batting? I've been tempted to give that process a go.

Hi, Mary. I like the colors and form of this piece. The stick hanger is quite appropriate. I'm not sure how you're managing to think of autumn. I'm glued to the AC and it's over 100F today. Autumn seems a long way off!
best, nadia

In reply to Sheila's comment....you are right....this particular piece of sun printed felted wool was def. on the homely side. I wasn't sure anything could save it but still, I wanted to try.

As far as working with the batting. My friend dyed it with such great colors and enough mottling to make it eye-catching. The negatives: it pills a bit, and it's not very strong....but balance with the positive of color and added texture, I'll be using it again!

Finally....for those of you who correctly wondered why I was into an autumn mind set when it's still sizzling this summer.....I've got a solo show at the NC Arboretum running from Aug. 16-Oct. 31st.....I'm preparing!!!
